My Flag, My Freedom, My Country

Texas Woman Told to Remove 'Offensive' American Flag From Office
Friday, May 29, 2009

Debbie McLucas comes from a patriotic family – her husband and both of her sons served in the U.S. military, and her daughter is currently deployed to Iraq on her second tour of duty as a combat medic.

So when McLucas arrived at work at a Texas hospital last Friday, she was stunned to be told that the Stars and Stripes she had hung in her office in advance of Memorial Day were offensive, and that the flag had been removed.

“I got into work, I was met by my supervisor and told that there had been multiple complaints, that people found the flag very offensive and it had been taken down," McLucas told FOXNews.com.

"I went to the office to retrieve it and found the flag wrapped around the pole, sitting in the corner on the ground. I was speechless."

McLucas, a supervisor at Kindred Hospital in Mansfield, Texas, had displayed the 3-by-5-foot flag in the office she shares with the hospital’s three other supervisors. McLucas said one of her colleagues, a woman who immigrated to the United States from Africa 14 years ago, complained about the flag to upper management, and the hospital decided to take down the flag. "I was told that as long as my flag offended one person, it would be taken down," McLucas said.

She said the hospital told her that the American flag flying outside the building would have to suffice. "I was told, ‘There is a flag hanging out front, everyone can see that one. Is that not enough?’"

No, she said, that wasn't enough.

"It is more than I can even fathom, that you would find the American flag offensive, in America," McLucas said.

A Kindred Healthcare spokeswoman did not return calls for comment. Kindred issued a press release stating, “Kindred Hospital Mansfield has a great deal of appreciation for the service that many of our employees and their families have given to their country. We honor our veterans and active military through a variety of benefits and service programs. This was an isolated incident between two employees that we are working to resolve amicably.”

The statement went on to explain: “The disagreement was over the size of the flag and not what it symbolized. We have invited the employee to put the flag back up.”

And it will go back up and stay up, McLucas said.

"I do think they're trying to do the right thing. I have no reason to believe the flag won't remain there as long as I'm employed."
------------

There is beauty in freedom. The beauty of this situation is that the immigrant that was offended by the flag has the freedom to return to her country of origin.

Most people come to America because they see it as a land of opportunity. A land where you can achieve success beyond your wildest dreams. A land where the only thing that can oppress you and hold you back is your own fear of failure or unwillingness to fight for what you want. They come here to seek refuge from tyranical leaders, social intolerance and terrorism. They want equal rights, a roof over their heads that they can call their own and a better future for their children and grandchildren.

People come here in record numbers and go as far as breaking the law to get here because they want what all 300 million of us have: free will.

So why then, are we still at this? Why are we still at this same point where people are offended by something that should not be offensive, and in turn do something suppress another human's right to express themselves and to show pride in their country?

The justification given as to why the flag was offensive doesn't sit with me. It had nothing to do with the size. That flag would have been offensive if it were 3 inches x 5 inches, and not 3 x 5 feet. The size of the flag does not matter. The message that flag carries is ALWAYS the same.

This is exactly why I don't work in human resources. If an employee came to me and told me that the American Flag offended them, I'd tell them to pack their bags. You came to this country for opportunity and you have no problem profiting from what America offers, yet you spit on our ideals, our symbols, our laws and our people.

Time to start thinning out the herd. If you want to come to my country, then you need to be prepared to become an American. We are a country where you can come from anywhere and be accepted as you are for who you are. That is the American way. You come here and seek out YOUR dreams as an individual, free from judgement and prejudice.

If the flag that symbolizes that freedom offends you, then you picked the wrong country.

Third Time's a Charm with Dick Cheney

Two terms in office as Vice President, and now Dick Cheney has returned to public life seemingly stronger than ever.

VP Cheney spoke to the American Enterprise Institute yesterday regarding our national security and to set the record straight on why he and Bush used the policies that they are being practically stoned for in the public square.

It is no secret that I am a long time supporter of many of the Bush Administration's National Security policies. The President's most important job in office is to protect the freedom and lives of Americans. President Bush did just that for 7 1/2 years and I thank the entire Bush Administration and our nation's military from the bottom of my heart for their service and dedication.

I'm going to use this blog to highlight some of the finer points that Cheney made during his speech (click for full transcript).

1. There in the bunker came the reports and images that so many Americans remember from that day - word of the crash in Pennsylvania, the final phone calls from hijacked planes, the final horror for those who jumped to their death to escape burning alive. In the years since, I've heard occasional speculation that I'm a different man after 9/11. I wouldn't say that. But I'll freely admit that watching a coordinated, devastating attack on our country from an underground bunker at the White House can affect how you view your responsibilities.

This part of Cheney's speech was key and necessary because he brought back the haunting images that so many Americans have long forgotten. It brought back to life that horrible morning that we sat in front of our tvs and watched people being forced to choose how they would die. It puts into perspective the state of mind in which VP Cheney must have been in as he sat by most likely feeling as helpless and vulnerable as the rest of America felt on that day. An event such as this does change you, and it should. But it was important that he took this all in the way he did because it motivated almost the entirety of his eight years in office.

2. Our government prevented attacks and saved lives through the Terrorist Surveillance Program, which let us intercept calls and track contacts between al-Qaeda operatives and persons inside the United States. The program was top secret, and for good reason, until the editors of the New York Times got it and put it on the front page. After 9/11, the Times had spent months publishing the pictures and the stories of everyone killed by al-Qaeda on 9/11. Now here was that same newspaper publishing secrets in a way that could only help al-Qaeda. It impressed the Pulitzer committee, but it damn sure didn't serve the interests of our country, or the safety of our people.

The bold print is imperative to Cheney's point because it parallels the actions of the Obama Administration right now as they are putting forth confidential information to serve their own interests while disregarding the safety of our nation. It also shows the swift movement that the Times took to demonize Bush and the policies he put into place to continue the preservation of their First Amendment Right.

3. By presidential decision, last month we saw the selective release of documents relating to enhanced interrogations. This is held up as a bold exercise in open government, honoring the public's right to know. We're informed, as well, that there was much agonizing over this decision.

Yet somehow, when the soul-searching was done and the veil was lifted on the policies of the Bush administration, the public was given less than half the truth. The released memos were carefully redacted to leave out references to what our government learned through the methods in question. Other memos, laying out specific terrorist plots that were averted, apparently were not even considered for release. For reasons the administration has yet to explain, they believe the public has a right to know the method of the questions, but not the content of the answers.

The answer to the bold print is plain and simple: The Obama Administration would be stopped in their tracks in their mission to put Bush and Cheney behind bars. Obama is becoming more and more arrogant by the day. He does no wrong. He is incapable of making mistakes. He clearly believes that the American People are incapable of thinking for themselves.

4. We had a lot of blind spots after the attacks on our country. We didn't know about al-Qaeda's plans, but Khalid Sheikh Muhammed and a few others did know. And with many thousands of innocent lives potentially in the balance, we didn't think it made sense to let the terrorists answer questions in their own good time, if they answered them at all.

To this I will make the same point that Bill O'Reilly has asked almost every guest that he debated waterboarding with: If your child was in danger, and someone knew information that would save your child but refused to give it up, would you waterboard them to save your child? This is exactly what waterboarding did. It saved lives, but the Obama Administration REFUSES to release the information that Cheney quite apparently KNOWS is in the memos that are being kept under wraps.

And to answer Bill's question: I would hold the scum under water until his skin disintegrated if he finally gave up the information to save my child. I'd do it to save ANYONE. When there is a perilous situation, you don't have time to putz around with a man that is clearly out of his right state of mind. You do what you have to do to extract the information that is necessary.

5. Apparently using the term "war" where terrorists are concerned is starting to feel a bit dated. So henceforth we're advised by the administration to think of the fight against terrorists as, quote, "Overseas contingency operations." In the event of another terrorist attack on America, the Homeland Security Department assures us it will be ready for this, quote, "man-made disaster" - never mind that the whole Department was created for the purpose of protecting Americans from terrorist attack.

And when you hear that there are no more, quote, "enemy combatants," as there were back in the days of that scary war on terror, at first that sounds like progress. The only problem is that the phrase is gone, but the same assortment of killers and would-be mass murderers are still there. And finding some less judgmental or more pleasant-sounding name for terrorists doesn't change what they are - or what they would do if we let them loose....

(parts skipped)

It's one thing to adopt the euphemisms that suggest we're no longer engaged in a war. These are just words, and in the end it's the policies that matter most. You don't want to call them enemy combatants? Fine. Call them what you want - just don't bring them into the United States. Tired of calling it a war? Use any term you prefer. Just remember it is a serious step to begin unraveling some of the very policies that have kept our people safe since 9/11.

To quote one of Obama's favorite sayings: lipstick on a pig. That's all this is. You can call a dog a cat until you are blue in the face, but it will not change the fact that it's a dog. You cannot change a person by being more sensitive to his feelings. This is nothing more than an attempt by the Obama Administration to put the war out of our minds so that they can further push their socialist agenda. If we forget out our national security, it will make it even easier for Obama to cut our military's funding so that the money can be appropriated to support his plethora of social programs.

6. If fine speech-making, appeals to reason, or pleas for compassion had the power to move them, the terrorists would long ago have abandoned the field. And when they see the American government caught up in arguments about interrogations, or whether foreign terrorists have constitutional rights, they don't stand back in awe of our legal system and wonder whether they had misjudged us all along. Instead the terrorists see just what they were hoping for - our unity gone, our resolve shaken, our leaders distracted. In short, they see weakness and opportunity.

This goes right along with point 5 that Cheney made in my list of quotes. We cannot call a person a "man caused disaster" and expect him to just give up his terrorist ways. Life doesn't work that way. These people are on a mission from God, or so some of them believe, and their mission is clear: kill Americans.

Ralph Peters has often made the point in his writings regarding the war that you simply cannot reason with a man that is so moved by religion that he would take his own life and the lives of others to get to heaven. They lack reason, and it's going to take more than a mere "contingency operation" to keep America safe. The sad fact of the matter is that people have to die in war. But why isn't the Obama Administration crying over the lives that Americans have sacrificed? Why are they so concerned that the people that set out on the crazy train to kill us are receiving plush accommodations?

It is because they are cowards. All of them. They are so wrapped up in "me me me" that they forget that they serve US. They fear the backlash of losing their supporters because they have made their supporters NEED THEM. Once their supporters realize that they don't NEED them, they are done.

7. As far as the interrogations are concerned, all that remains an official secret is the information we gained as a result. Some of his defenders say the unseen memos are inconclusive, which only raises the question why they won't let the American people decide that for themselves. I saw that information as vice president, and I reviewed some of it again at the National Archives last month. I've formally asked that it be declassified so the American people can see the intelligence we obtained, the things we learned, and the consequences for national security. And as you may have heard, last week that request was formally rejected. It's worth recalling that ultimate power of declassification belongs to the President himself. President Obama has used his declassification power to reveal what happened in the interrogation of terrorists. Now let him use that same power to show Americans what did not happen, thanks to the good work of our intelligence officials.

Obama is only interested in giving more reasons to apologize for Americans rash and terrible behavior. It is favorable to his cause to release information that makes us look so mean spirited, but it is quite another to release the whole truth.

8. For all the partisan anger that still lingers, our administration will stand up well in history - not despite our actions after 9/11, but because of them. And when I think about all that was to come during our administration and afterward - the recriminations, the second-guessing, the charges of "hubris" - my mind always goes back to that moment.

To put things in perspective, suppose that on the evening of 9/11, President Bush and I had promised that for as long as we held office - which was to be another 2,689 days - there would never be another terrorist attack inside this country. Talk about hubris - it would have seemed a rash and irresponsible thing to say. People would have doubted that we even understood the enormity of what had just happened. Everyone had a very bad feeling about all of this, and felt certain that the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Shanksville were only the beginning of the violence.

I am one of many that hope that history will be kind to President Bush and Vice President Cheney when it comes to national security. They made a lot of hard decisions, but the important thing to remember is that they made the decision and without apology because what they did was not self serving. What they did truly served US.

Liar Liar, Why isn't the Beltway on Fire?

In the true spirit of American Patriotism, Madame Speaker Pelosi cannot muster up the gumption to say these three tiny little words: "I was wrong."

Pelosi is so worried about her image and about punishing the Bush Administration, that she is willing to hang the CIA out to dry. How are the brave men and women that have volunteered for the job of protecting us from terrorists supposed to do their job when they are being accused by Congress of engaging in criminal acts for the sake of getting some future campaign backing from the brainless idiots over at Moveon.org, Code Pink, and other hateful left wing groups? Pelosi is biting off more than she can chew with this one. She is digging herself a hole likely to lead to China inside a week.

The experts at the CIA know more about how to keep us safe than some crazy woman parading outside of military recruitment stations in a pink feather boa, yet Pelosi does all she can to save her hide when what she really needs to do is step down and call it a day.

Rather than doing the right thing and admitting to her lies, Madame Speaker continues to wrap herself in a web of fallacies that ten men with scissors couldn't get out of. Today, she once again has stated that she stands by her claim that the CIA are in fact the deceitful ones. While we have a group of released memos that compromise our national security by giving our interrogation secrets (not that we are allowed to use them any longer) to the enemy and beyond, we have conveniently been dubbed too stupid to understand the findings of the memos that detail the results of those interrogations.

You have to love a government that decides what we are intelligent enough to comprehend, along with how many miles to the gallon our cars should get on the highway, the type of syrup that iHop can serve, and what our money is best spent on. But no matter. He won! So we must agree with all of the listed above.

If the CIA lied, then so be it. This is how I feel about the CIA: I don't care what you do or how you do it. If what you are doing saves lives and is in the best interest of our nation and her citizens, then do it.

I'm on a need to know basis with the CIA and military. Most of it, I don't need to know and we quite frankly do not have a right to know. Enhanced Interrogation Methods and our military's tactics are classified for reason. Yet our darling President finds it acceptable to let our enemy know exactly what measures we are willing to take to defeat them and to protect innocent lives. Let's be honest...I was SHOCKED when I learned what the methods were.  I pretty much am volunteering myself right now to be interrogated under these methods. DUNK ME! I don't care! (Accept for the caterpillar one. Lock me in a room with an insect of any species and I'll sing like a canary, for lack of a better cliche.)

Yesterday, former Vice President Dick Cheney gave what I would consider to be one of the most incredible speeches that I have heard in quite awhile. It was brutally honest and to the point. I mean, he even gave the location of the secret bunker used to stow away the VPOTUS in the event of a terrorist attack. Wait, that was our new dear vice leader, Motor Mouth Biden.

Cheney really hit back against the Obama Administration hard. The more Cheney fights for the release of the CIA memos that detail the information obtained as a result of enhanced interrogations the more you can see he is clearly telling the truth. If he were lying, Obama would gleefully release the rest of the memos and parade Cheney around DuPont Circle wearing a scarlet letter. (This of course would immediately be followed by a completely unconstitutional trial that would send George W. Bush and Cheney to the firing squad for war crimes.) Instead, we are supposed to just trust that Obama is the honest one based on his rhetoric and celebrity-like appeal.

Alexander Hamilton once wrote this of trusting your leader:

"For it is a truth, which the experience of all ages has attested, that the people are commonly most in danger when the means of injuring their rights are in the possession of those [toward] whom they entertain the least suspicion." (Federalist Papers, No. 25)

Obama brings up the point that HE WON ad nauseum. He won't release those memos because he will be revealed a liar. He is so trusted right now, that he only has more to gain. Our freedom for one. Hamilton was a wise man. Obama's followers would blindly follow him off a cliff to their death because they believe so much in his healing powers of the world. They believe so truly in him that he will take away their pain, their responsibility, and consequences for their actions. And he just may do those things, but the price we pay will be a dangerous one. He is too trusted.

Another reason he will not release the memos is because then Speaker Pelosi is revealed a liar. Second in line for the Presidency, and we have Biden in between, and we all know that he is not exactly a truth machine himself so much as a gaffe machine that lacks knowledge in basic history regarding the country he runs.

Obama needs Pelosi right now to help push the socialist agenda through Congress, and as quickly as possible. Pelosi has already proven that she will withhold legislation that the Republicans want to pass from and up or down vote (last summer's American Energy Act that would have allowed us to be drilling for our own oil at this point). This is a characteristic that the Obama Administration and the DNC need on their side. Pelosi is sneaky and ruthless, along with the rest of the Washington Criminal Machine. (By the way, I wanted to write a blog on this but I'll just say it now. Did anybody watch the signing of the credit card legislation today where Obama gave a "shout out" to Dodd and Fwank? Dispicable. The leader of the free world gave a "shout out" and referred to these kooks as "partners in crime." Absolutely unprofessional, but at least he pegged it right when he said "partners in crime.")

I hope that the beltway has propped up some stimulus money to the Washington D.C. fire departments. If the web of lies continues, Washington is going to burn to the ground.

**This blog will be followed by an in depth analysis of key points from Cheney's speech. Stay tuned!**

Lessons in Democracy from Walt Disney

A few weekends ago, I watched a movie with my son called "Tigger & Pooh and a Musical Too." It's a Disney movie based on the television show "My Friends Tigger & Pooh." It's actually a very cute show. My son loves Tigger and Disney is still making family friendly movies, so I was on board.

Jordan is a bit too young for movies and tv but he enjoys the music, so the movie was just playing in the background while we did other things around the house. What I didn't expect was to very early in the movie hit "record" on the DVR because one of the opening songs caught my attention in a way that I didn't expect it to.

The movie starts off with a song about friendship and all of the residents of the Hundred Acre Wood are having a picinic organized by Rabbit. Rabbit did such a wonderful job organizing the picinic that he was immediately appointed Mayor of the Hundred Acre Wood. (They made a community organizer mayor...sounds vaguely familiar.)

Upon Rabbit's inaugeration, he breaks into song to tell the citizens what he will do for them as mayor. This is where my ears perked up. The lyrics were as follows:

"Since more order and control are what we need
Here are some simple rules, just a few, for us to heed

No pecking twice on trees
And no bothering the bees
And regarding Beaver's dam, there's this degree:
Building dams requires a permit
And a foreman to confirm it
And that foreman, quite conveniently, is me
Just a few simple rules to follow to a T
And what a splendid Hundred Acre Wood this will be"

The always pessimistic Eeyore immediately asks if anyone is afraid but him and after the citing of a few rules says that he has a feeling Rabbit isn't done yet. He was correct.

Everyone must do their chores at the same time of day
Lunch is always promptly served at noon
Pooh must give up honey (there is too much in his diet) in favor of more vegetables
Tigger's bouncing is restricted to 30 minutes per day (Even though bouncing is what Tiggers do best!)
You are not allowed to give goods to people on the other side of the border.

The list quickly grew longer and longer and all of the new laws were posted where all of the residents could see. Rabbit appointed Beaver as his deputy mayor and had him patrolling to make sure everyone was following the rules. Tigger decided that he had had enough of the accessive rules and restriction on their personal freedom, and so half of the Hundred Acre Wood seceded from the union, so to speak. A line was painted down the middle of the Hundred Acre Wood and no one was allowed to cross the line. The line unfortunately ran right through the middle of Piglet's home.

At one point, Kanga wished to give a plate of cookies to her friends that lived on Tigger's side of the Hundred Acre Wood and was told that she could not do so. (There goes the free trade agreement!)

The plot went on to divide the friends further, as one side of the Hundred Acre Wood had no freedom and the other had possibly too much freedom with no rules at all. Complete tyranny on the left and anarchy on the right.

I saw so much in current events, I couldn't help myself but be completely absorbed in a children's movie in a way that no child would be. Kids understand the root of adult problems. They understand what is fair and what is not and could certainly come to those conclusions while watching this movie. But they may not understand the historial significance that I took away or the correlation to current events.

Pooh was put on a diet by the mayor. We now have the government talking about regulating people's diets because humans that consume too much food are at fault for global warming and we also need to have people healthy since we're going to be paying for everyone's healthcare.

Tigger wasn't allowed to bounce because it disturbed Rabbit's peace and quiet.

Everyone was put on a schedule and was to do everything the same. There was no voting, there was no voice of the people.

Beaver patrolled the border like a member of the KGB giving out citations and looking for people not abiding the law or trying to cross from Tigger's side (they were considered radical on the right...I wonder where I have met a bunch of right wing extremists recently?).

In short, if you have young kids, I'd honestly take this opporunity to watch this movie with your kids. Let them enjoy the music. Let them enjoy the classic characters and Tigger and Pooh's new friends. But after the movie, ask them how they felt about the events. Ask them what was right and what was wrong about what happened to the resident's under Rabbit's rule and under Tigger's rule on the other side. This is honestly a great movie to engage your children in to teach them the value of freedom and the importance of having reasonable law to keep us safe and honest.
